-Colors of Light-
For KUON’s spring/summer 2022 collection designer Shinichiro Ishibashi sought inspiration from three main ideas: light, communication, and travel.
Inspired by light, Ishibashi created expressive clothing with the goal of enriching one’s heart. Shadows, darkness, and color are inherently associated with vision, and thus with what we can see. The visual interplay between shadows and light allowed for a variety of visual effects throughout the collection. There is a cotton poplin coach’s jacket, resin-printed with a geometric pattern resembling broken rays of refracted light, and a cardigan with a surface texture that mimics a rippled moiré pattern with its transparent mesh layer, and elsewhere a suit of sashiko fabric subtly shot through with silver lamé threads that only become visible depending on the angle of the light.
Ishibashi aimed to create clothing to lift one’s spirit and to convey a form of communication through clothing, during a time when the normal channels of inter-personal contact were reduced to digital mediums. Throughout the collection, one can find subtle nods to Ishibashi’s analysis of communication. For example, Ishibashi is well-known for his use of traditional Japanese fabrics and techniques, as with his use of sakiori stitching on the right-hand cuff of a shirt, or a sweatshirt with the upper-arm banded with boro patchwork, both meant to symbolize the communicative gesture of a handshake. Or with t-shirts, shorts, and shirts that juxtapose digitally printed patchwork fabric with embroidered boro patchwork. These pieces appear completely hand-quilted from a distance, but upon drawing closer, perception shifts, and the contrast between the two fabric surfaces is revealed. All are intended to bring a playful sense of visual incongruity, intriguing the eye and, hopefully, provoking an actual conversation.
Travel restrictions made Ishibashi yearn for foreign lands, and so the memory of the light in Mexico influenced his use of sage green, pale pink, and sand palette for spring/summer. Elsewhere the liberal use of tucks and pleats in shirts and shorts, inspired by the folds of origami, express a sense of exuberance through the metered rhythm of repetitive shapes.
