LAFAYETTE 148 NEW YORK FALL 21
FALL 2021 MARKS THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY for Lafayette 148, and for Creative Director Emily Smith, a moment to reset, reengage, reimagine. The hope—to honor how far we’ve come, and to forge a new way forward by reconnecting with our founding values—kindness, intelligence and integrity.
There’s a distinct sense of purpose to every choice in the collection, and a consciousness of the impact both on people and the planet. Sustainable materials abound, from sumptuous natural yarns to undyed noble fibers to fabrics spun from regenerated filaments. Ease and adaptability are paramount: reversible coats and jackets are offered in abundance. Silhouettes are multipurpose, put together in layered looks that blur the boundaries between dressed up and down—ideal for the way modern women are living today. Likewise, fabrics are engineered to fuse luxe and low key, as seen in crushed satin pajama sets
and dusters, sueded cotton separates and KindWool suiting that has all the ease of joggers.
Silhouettes tend toward the straight and columnar, with longer hemlines and visual interest coming from tactile fabrics and cuts on the bias. Standouts include an array of decadent statement coats that command attention yet are cozy enough to wrap up in at home; nubby knits, from sweaters to scarves and beanies that combine warmth and luxury; and a daydream-y abstract nature
motif that’s interpreted in novel ways. Finally, color is key: Fall’s rich palette of saturated shades is plucked from precious stones and natural elements, with vibrant emerald, ultramarine, ember orange and clay cast against softer tonal shades of ginger root, seaweed and ink, while an undercurrent of greys and green-cast neutrals lend an anchoring, season-spanning ground. All told, the
collection proves that luxury, sustainability and versatility can live in harmony, and offers a blueprint to build on for the next quarter century—both for women’s wardrobes and L148.
