IT IS NOT SPRING, UNTIL ALL FLOWERS BLOSSOM is the début collection from the New York based design label YA YI. The collection is a response to the designer’s personal experience working alongside the Chinese immigrants that make up the garment factories in New York, whose names are scarcely mentioned by the industry nor celebrated designers.

To commemorate the 1982 Garment Strike which took place in New York Chinatown, the title of the collection IT IS NOT SPRING, UNTIL ALL FLOWERS BLOSSOM comes from Shui Mak Ka, a factory worker who initialized the strike. On Mott Street, over 20,000 garment workers — almost entirely women — marched down the center of Chinatown to Columbus Park on a warm spring day in 1982. They donned union hats and raised picket signs to press for the renewal of their union contracts. United, immigrant Chinese American women called for workers’ rights that would forever impact U.S. labor history.

The collection portrays the overlooked laboring body of Asian immigrant women by recreating their portraits through female performers veiled with translucent lace and knit jacquard fabrics, adorned with heavily fringed garments and embroidered flower accessories.

Between a fashion collection, documentary film, performance film and artist book, this multi-disciplinary project involves the collaboration of more than 50 Asian and American creatives based in the US. Together, they reinterpret the garment factory space and portray the invisible working hands as a homage to the Asian American immigration history.
