“Fulfillment of Cherished Dreams” is a contemplation about cotton and what the industry has meant in history. In the 60’s, famed photographer Ernest Lowe traveled throughout California capturing images of migrant workers who had left the Jim Crow South to find opportunity. Wanting to bring awareness to the living and working conditions, he captured poverty and backbreaking work, but also a sense of humanity and dignity. When he returned in 2015, many of the children he photographed still lived there, but had escaped farm labor, living successful lives in service, hospitality, and government. This is where I drew my inspiration on American workwear and the spirit of industry and mobility.

Workwear’s indestructible nature, contrasting with its fragility, was the perfect comparison to the heroic nature of those laborers.

Exposed and exaggerated patterns, with a sense of ongoing process to completion, is a dominant theme of this collection. With the natural cotton colors, I wanted to create ghosts of everyday factory garments.
Garments with a past and a story to tell.

Paradoxically, I decided to use Khadi fabric from India. Originally encouraged by Mahatma Gandhi during the Indian independence movement, Khadi is handspun and handwoven by local artisans in India, 70% of which are women. Each inch of the fabric is different from the next, due to its handmade craftsmanship, which adds to the uniqueness of each piece. The combination of these ideas shows the duality of industry in our world - how the past may be dark but the future remains bright.
