Ava Yi-Ping Zhou's collection titled: Melancholy Fantasies is a menswear collection that takes you back into the past, brings you into a new realm of fantastical world, and re-lives your most daring memories. The collection tells a story of a man’s beauty, delicacy, and an explosion of power through vulnerability. Borrowing the concept of a fairytale and telling the story with a child-like accent. It bonds people and invites the wearers to play, act, and be the main characteristic of the story.
The colors in the collection are dim, but the shapes of the garments are playful. There are ribbons, bows, lace, and veils. Traces of these elements, in their many expressions, speak to the idea of femininity in menswear; however, it also investigates the feel of the garments. The rapport between the clothes and the body is the main focus.
The collection explores the sensuality of dressing as one feels the tightness of the fabric wrapping you up, the empty spaces caused by the heavy sculpting of the fabric, and the air brushing against the bare skin. The feeling of delicacy when wearing the garments is the sole achievement of the collection. The intimacy when feeling the bow ties dangling down your back touching your bare skin just so slightly, it tickles. It is the comfort you will feel when wrapped in the garments, cocooning inside, ready for the process of metamorphosis.

Ava Yi-Ping Zhou challenges the fashion system by creating collections that are seasonless. It can be seen and felt in the clothes she makes that she guides the attention to the chemistry between the garments and the wearer - which evokes unique sensations and highlights the power of dressing. It is important to her that her designs speak to the sensuality of wearing the garments, and provokes a connective experience. Additionally, her insights into a new form of menswear are translated into poetry and delivered through the romances of her works.
