CARTER YOUNG SS21 'Obscured'
The SS21 'Obscured' collection is inspired by subverting ideas of traditional Americana expressed through cultural icons like Robert Redford and Peter Fonda.
Through the Appaloosa portraits of Roeg Cohen and the directorial and artistic eye of Haley E. Anderson and Anthony J. Thomas, we tried to present a world in which these beliefs in freedom and individualism show a more equitable representation of the cultures and people that exist in the America we know.

How we developed the 'Collaged Appaloosa' print with Roeg Cohen
Most of this season’s fabrics were sourced domestically, specifically from vintage and deadstock production. Some of the standouts include the ’Chili Pepper’ denim with black and red dyed warp and weft threads and the ‘Brick’ cone denim which we were able to source from a supplier who had been saving it from the now-defunct mill. Many of the deadstock fabrics were only available in limited quantities, which means limited production, but it also makes the collection more special and exciting. We also developed a custom print this season with photographer Roeg Cohen. His work focuses on portraiture, capturing his subjects, whether human or equestrian, in intimate settings with dramatic details. In conjunction with the themes of this season, his appaloosa photos became symbolic of a sort of picturesque 1960’s American-style freedom found in films like ‘Easy Rider’. We took a series of his photos and together developed a collage-style horse-hair print that tries to recall that cultural iconography while simultaneously removing its stilted and exclusionary connotations.
Anthony on his feelings about the set
“This community that we've made and this feeling... I mean, just like Haley said, I'm really, really, really in love with jazz. You know, that's nothing to do with this film. But in terms of all the jazz things that I really really like, they spoke a lot -- Thelonious Monk, Pharoah Sanders and all the artists that I really really like, sit down and listen to -- they always spoke about having a sense of like jamming with the homies and genuine people that you care about and really appreciate the sound and textures as you're trying to make. And I think that's what we had with this. Everyone had such genuine care about this thing getting done. And it was hot as hell.”
