WATARU TOMINAGA

Wataru Tominaga was born in 1988 in Kumamoto, Japan, and currently based in Tokyo. With an international outlook Tominaga gained his education in both Japan, the UK and Finland at; Musashino Art University, University of Art and Design Helsinki, Bunka Fashion College, Tokyo and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, BA Fashion Print with practical placements with John Galliano, Eddie Peake and BLESS. His education concluded with an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts London, England.

In 2016, He won The Grand Jury Première Vision Prize at The 31st International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères and was the artist in residency at Palais de Tokyo, Le Pavillon Neuflize OBC, Paris (2016-2017). Most recently, was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30–Asia–The Arts 2018 list, and since has launched his own collection in spring 2020 with his first commercial collection.

Tominaga presented his latest collection at Lagos Fashion Week – a collection that merged art, fashion and culture. At Nonaka-Hill, LA, California, Tominaga presented his textiles; with their universal and genderless motifs in the gallery environment. His body defying volumes, acting almost as sculptures — highlight his background in and understanding of art and broad cultural references — drawing on his experiences working with Eddie Peake and contemporary dancers on his residency at the Palais de Tokyo - exploring the body, gender and clothes’ part in altering and shaping the figure.
