Voices From The Snow
Snowflakes change their shape as they fall, binding to each other to form snow. Each crystal may appear spiky and yet they embrace me softly as they glisten and fuse together. When compressed together, they transform into stone. These characteristics of snow made me appreciate life and affirmed how I should embrace nature.
Having grown up in Iwate prefecture*, where the winters are long, my childhood was consumed with being in the snow, whether it was skiing, or simply playing in the snow with my friends making snowballs, throwing them at each other, and making snow igloos. But when I was indoors at home, I often played with fabric remnants.
As I grew up, I was inspired by the characteristics of what snow can bring. As mundane as this may sound, I was mesmerized by snowflakes falling on my ski gloves and melting and amused by drawing with my fingers on frost-covered windows. Silence at night during the winter was utterly different from other seasons, with the snow absorbing and muffling all sounds.
For this Fall/Winter 2023 season, snow and snowflakes play a big part of the aesthetic of the collection. Snowflake pattern embroidery on blousons and the sides of trackpants, and Chevron patterned knitwear, are all inspired by skiwear I wore during my childhood, reflecting the snowcapped mountains of Iwate. The abstract stripes on shirts are derived from the tense, silent snowy nights and are created from Arimatsu Shibori, a tie-dyed technique going back to the Edo-period. Selvedge denim also plays a key component in the collection as shown in a new trucker jacket and five-pocket jeans. All the denim comes from Kojima, Okayama and dyed either solely in indigo by repeated rope dying or as seen in the black denim, made of a sulfide hank-dyed weft and rope-dyed warp that fade over time creating a vintage-like crisp faded look similar to indigo denim.
