Floating Memory
“Suppose that one's memory is frozen in the past and cannot form new memories, what then?”
In the middle of creating the 2021 autumn and winter series, RUI was touched by Henry Gustave Molaison, the most famous amnesiac in the scientific community in the 20th century. Henry’s memory ended with temporal lobe resection. Then he stayed in a short cycle of consciousness forever, with nothing but epilepsy of new memories blur in his brain.
Frozen in the state of "ever being", Henry's story inspired RUI to trace back in time, re-mapping transient, yet conscious imagery, into a thoughtful texture that is tangible and traceable.
This season’s hazy fabrics are tightly linked together undergirded by crystal pearls, clear but also indistinct sometimes. The boundary between entity and nothingness is drawn. Through the overlapping of various pieces, covering most of the skin and only maintaining the fine hollow, making the boundary between exposure and concealment vague. The infusion of teal and fuchsia increases the visual impact, and the power of female emotions are conveyed in the subtle details of design. The curve structure carefully demonstrates figures, connecting delicate venation between the new and the old. From the subtle to the magnificent, right on the best, and the formed visual effect conveys the theme of time and space distortion.
