Summer / Prefall 2021
Wood, fire, earth, metal and water are at the center of Carolina K’s PF21 collection as Creative Director Carolina Kleinman gives nod to the Chinese philosophy of the Five Elements Theory, Wuxing. Wood fuels fire, fire produces earth, earth bears metal, metal collects water and water nourishes wood. Symbols of the basic elements’ inter-promotion cycle of life are represented throughout the collection using hand embroidery details, custom prints and appliqués, juxtaposed with the brand’s signature style of geometric folklore rooted in Latin American heritage.
Timeless pieces entirely made with organic materials that have a connection to the spiritual world drive Carolina K’s creative process. Clear symbolic references of the sun and the moon are present, and color palettes include shades of green, burgundy, blue and terracotta. Life elements are then brought forth by commissioned Mexican artist Belén Moy, depictive of hand-painted bamboo, flowers, and birds that cleverly co-exist in the collection with Carolina K’s Mushroom Garden prints representative of a dreamy, eclectic spirit leading to freedom.
Hand-sketched vessels inspired by 16th century Chinese and Korean ceramics pay tribute to their use for survival - ceramics made with the basic elements (earth, water, wood and fire) have long been used to carry water and store food. This season’s silhouettes are not only the gate-keepers to comfort, leisure and versatility as the world continues to spend time at home, but also serve as a roadmap to unraveling what is next for the Carolina K brand.
